There's a lot of running snobbery around - that if you can't run it under a certain time, don't bother. It has been frustrating for me as I've uncovered some medical issues during the training process and I've been considering giving up my plans to run a marathon in December. But your story is really inspirational, so maybe I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-85651160935151979962009-10-17T10:24:42.356-04:002009-10-17T10:24:42.356-04:00That said, after running a 6 hour marathon... Julia, keep it up.

The back of the pack is a fun place to run. When I did my marathon, I met a 75 year old woman out run/walking! Talk about inspiration!

I've noticed the only people who criticize me are couch potatoes justifying their inactivity. "Oh- you walked??? That doesn't count. I could do it...but umm.. running hurts my knees". Most runners are super supportive.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-25122870209930972962009-10-16T13:45:07.123-04:002009-10-16T13:45:07.123-04:00Good story. Though I've never run a marathon, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I'll be 'with' you at every finish line. Congratulations on finishing your recent race, overcoming your physical challenges, and saying "I can."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-24706463163061768032009-10-16T11:13:58.993-04:002009-10-16T11:13:58.993-04:00Great great article!!! Makes me think maybe I could even finish a marathon. I'm huffing and puffing after the local 5ks but maybe, just maybe, I could work my way up to join Julia and others like her. Could we get a follow up interview with Julia that tells us more details about her training and her tips for people who want to be like her?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-21122200199066820502009-10-16T08:43:11.255-04:002009-10-16T08:43:11.255-04:00Thank you so much for posting this interview. I am also a slower runner and somewhat get annoyed that some races place time limits - I guess it helps me to move along though - i.e. my first big race was the Racefest Half Marathon - 3 hr time limit. I finished in 2 hr, 40 min - but I was never happier to finish! Makes me think I can do a full marathon now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-61251451112169813472009-10-16T08:04:33.502-04:002009-10-16T08:04:33.502-04:00Congrat's Julia. Most of us will never run a marathon in under 4 hours. With training, motivation and the right mental attitude, we can complete a marathon in the 5 - 6 hour range, especially using the Galloway program. I hope this inspires those who wanted to run a marathon to seriously consider it but were afraid to try because they might be looked down on by "running snobs" they were "too slow". In addition, when you are participating in an event to raise money, the important thing is that you completed your event and got the money to help your cause. Continued best of luck.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3349528968660309588.post-4315876386404473022009-10-15T23:48:50.181-04:002009-10-15T23:48:50.181-04:00Thank you for writing about this remarkable woman....Thank you for writing about this remarkable woman. I. too, have finished a few marathons using every minute that they allow me to use to cross the finish line. One of my favorite quotes is "there will be a million reasons why you will think you can't finish a marathon but after you do it there will be a million reasons you are glad you did." Congratulations to Julia and to all people who have the courage to just TRY! It is nice that Theoden is hosting a blog on running that profiles running from a local angle. It is great that we see someone like Julia profiled because she has the courage to run and has accepted that she is not the fasters runner. I can tell you about almost every step, all the sights, sounds, smells, how the sun looked through the trees, etc. of that race. I took a ton of pictures along the route but the memories are priceless. I too was out there almost 3 times longer than the winners but they saw none of what I saw.
