Summer Trail Series starts tonight

Last-minute news flash (better late than never right?):

The Summer Trail Series, presented by Charlotte Health and Fitness, launches at 7 tonight at Colonel Francis Beatty Park with the first of three monthly 5K trail races. The park is at 4330 Weddington Road in Matthews. Race-day registration is $25 (kids are $7 with a paid adult).

The next two events in the series are Tuesday, July 28, at McAlpine Creek Park and Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Reedy Creek Park. They're also evening races. Pre-registration for each of those is $20 -- or, if you sign up ahead of time for both, it's $37.

One of the true gems in the Charlotte racing scene is the Trail Series. Although billed as back to basics, they are anything but. They are extremely well run. One of the best goody bags I've received at ANY race in a long time. The t-shirt has a foot print on the front and clever slogan on the rear. Post race food and beer are top notch. No bear truck here. Each person gets their own can of beer! Awards were beer mugs! If you are a long time runner, you will appreciate the fact that there is no chip timing. The running bib has the tear off strip that you give the time keeper as you cross the finishing line. Great way to keep race costs down. I ran the winter trail series, and I'll be back for the next two races. Besides, this is a great way to discover the trails and greenways of Charlotte.
