When and why go topless?

Good discussion earlier this week on my Facebook page about guys who run shirtless.

I raised the issue since it cracked 90 degrees Thursday and soared to near triple-digits today. The questions were simple: Guys, do you run shirtless when it's this hot out? Girls, how do you feel about guys who run shirtless?

Some of the answers were predictable -- from a female, "If they look good (not just think they look good), it's fine" -- and some weren't -- from a male, "I used to run shirtless down to 40 degrees." But it was all interesting, so I bring the discussion over to the blog. And I ask you:

Fellas: Are you a shirt taker-offer? Is there a threshold, temperature-wise? Or places that you'll go topless, and places that you won't?

Ladies: Does it bother you when guys go sans shirt? Are you envious that you can't go topless? And do you ever run wearing just a sports bra?

I like to see half nekkid men running! And yes, I run w/only a sports bra...the wind on my skin is wonderfully refreshing.

I'm with Emily! If it's hot, I run in just a sports bra. I have no problem with guys running without a shirt; I appreciate it when guys with great bodies run without their shirts. Thanks fellas!

Depends on the time of the year. But once it starts warming up in the spring, 65 degrees is a comfortable temp for shirtless running. Humidity can throw another variable in there though, but that is a different story.

As a gay guy, I love seeing hot shirtless guys running around in the heat. Nothing better than that ;)

Shirtless is fine, but what really drives me nuts is how hot my nuts get while I run. I've tried running pantless, but my junk starts swinging around and I'm always worried about the stigma associated with streaking on a 6 mile run. A thin jockstrap and no shorts really does the trick for me.

If only the posters on the rest of the site were as good as the ones here.

Love running shirtless. This time of year, your shirt becomes a weight with sweet. It is a free feeling to run without a shirt.

Ah, nothing more inspiring to work out harder than seeing a female jogger in just a sports bra.
That being said, a woman can get away with a little extra and just SB, a dude has to be cut, or it looks bad

I have almost swerved off the road staring at lovely men jogging with their shirts on, so of course I'm all for lovely men jogging with 'em off. I'll keep my car in my lane, I promise.

as a post op, i love seeing gay men and straight men run with as little on as possible. What could be more of a turn on than a sweaty male body. maybe ill go walk around east blvd today and check out the men!!!

As an uptown worker, I gotta tell you: It's pretty disgusting when you're just walking down Tryon and guys jog past without a shirt on. Ew.

Function over fashion. A heavy, hot, wet shirt slows you down, chafes your skin and is more laundry! I used to run consistent high mileage and a shirt is just a hassle. Hopefully if you're running high mileage the gut overhang is non existent.

At a park or greenway if it is at all 'warm' 65-70 degrees and up, no question no shirt. Around my neighborhood I'm a little more conservative based on this quote from cutting through a neighborhood park: "Look Daddy he's naked!" "No son, thats just running clothes."

If you have rolls, back fat or excessive hair, you should keep Charlotte beautiful and keep yourself covered.

I prefer seeing good looking men out running shirtless in all weather.

I stick to a top over my sports bra, but if I was trim, I'd go leave the top off.

The only time I've run shirtless was on a day when I miscalculated the temperature and had a long sleeve shirt on when it was way too warm.

I am pretty fit so I probably didn't scare anyone, but I was pretty self-conscious when running in my neighborhood.

It seems like if you have a good lightweight wicking shirt that it keeps you cooler than having the sun directly on your skin

I run shirtless anytime its 60+ and think nothing of it. The only time I feel slightly uncomfortable is post-run, dripping with sweat, on my 11 floor elevator commute with someone else on the elevator. But, usually, by that time I'm so hopped up on endorphins I get over it fairly quickly.

Please keep your sweat to yourself. It is incredibly rude to sweat on someone unless you are having sex with them.

If some half naked sweaty guy gets on the elevator with me at work there is a good chance I will pepper spray them. I'd say 100% chance if so much as a drop of nasty person I'm not having sex with sweat touches me.

I believe I do keep my sweat to myself. To clarify, I'm not in an elevator with formal people going to work -- I'm at home, in a residential elevator, generally with other people in various states of "cleanliness". Additionally, I'm not actually touching or dripping on anyone unless they are winding around my feet like a cat or something (though I might change my mind if I were pepper sprayed!).

Furthermore, is sweat any less disgusting if someone has a dripping wet shirt on vs. being shirtless? If you feel cooler running shirtless (which I do) I'd actually argue running shirtless creates less sweat than running with a shirt.

I love watching Emily N. glide by. She's the bomb!

Just a sports bra feels nice running on a hot night. But during the day, I agree with a prior comment - I actually feel cooler with a fitted tank made with wicking material. Otherwise I just feel like I'm sweating off my sunscreen and getting burnt. Then again, my Irish skin is a bit more sensitive than some people's :-)

I say just do whatever feels good. But bring a shirt if you're making a stop on the way home!

I can't run with a shirt on. Trying a take a sweat-soaked shirt off is tough!

Please people keep your clothes on unless you're at the pool or at the beach. There are plenty of fabrics to pull sweat away from your body and still be comfortable without everyone having to see your gross sweaty body.

Try running down the street shirtless in Bermuda or the Bahamas. You'll get a 200 dollar fine and maybe jail time.

Many an American has been surprised to learn the brits are serious about what is proper.

Since I run at 4:00 a.m., I don't think it matters very much whether I am shirtless or not. When the humidity gets high, I am in shorts, socks and shoes only... even at that hour.

I can't run without a shirt on. My body runs hot and I sweat easily, so a shirt is preferred. I find that long sleeves works great because the sweat is collected and I am cooled down easily.

do what you want when you want. who cares.

I'm with Rachel..who cares! I have 2 kids and am quite comfortable running with only shorts and a sports bra. There's going to be a time when it's not going to be so firm and flat...so work it while you can!

I love to pass a man without his shirt on...especially when I'm only wearing a sports bra and shorts...whoop-whoop!

I agree with Rachel as well...who cares.

I run topless all year around with my triathlete lycra shorts at 6am in the mornings!! I love it.

I have a lean runners-triathlete-swimmers build and I don't care what others think. I receive a few stares from a few people, but I don't really care what others think. I train hard and I am very comfortable in my own skin!!
