5K tempts with flat course, cool schwag

This one looks like it'll be a great addition to the running calendar for folks up in Rowan County and the surrounding areas...

Knights of Columbus Oktoberfiesta 5K, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (128 N. Fulton St.) in Salisbury: The race, in its first year, starts at 9 a.m. and is run on a flat, fast course. There's also a half-mile Fun Run at 10 a.m. The two events kick off a day- and night-long "Oktoberfiesta" celebration at the church featuring crafts, kids games and inflatables, international food, beer, music and more. 5K registration is $20 for adults, $15 for students 12 and younger, with the first 200 entrants receiving a Brooks running shirt and a pair of double-layer WrightSocks (items valued at $30!). Plus, the top male and female finishers will get a free pair of Brooks running shoes. Proceeds from the races benefit mentally challenged individuals and other local organizations.
